FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about dog training, German Shepherds, and our programs in Northern California.

General Training

How long does dog obedience training take?

Basic obedience training typically takes 4–8 weeks for most dogs. Advanced training can take 3–6 months. The timeline depends on the dog's age, breed, prior training, and how consistently the owner reinforces the training at home.

What is the best age to start training a dog?

Training can begin as early as 8 weeks old. Early socialization and basic command training during puppyhood creates the strongest foundation. However, dogs of any age can be successfully trained with the right approach and consistency.

Can aggressive dogs be trained?

Yes. Most aggressive dogs can be successfully rehabilitated with professional guidance. Thomas Sauerhoefer has over 30 years of experience resolving aggression in dogs of all breeds. Early intervention produces the best results, but even severe cases can be improved significantly.

How do I train a German Shepherd puppy?

Start with short, positive training sessions covering sit, stay, come, and leash manners. Socialization is equally important — expose your puppy to different people, environments, and sounds. Professional guidance from the start builds the right foundation and prevents bad habits from forming.

Schutzhund & Protection

What is Schutzhund dog training?

Schutzhund (now called IGP) is a German working dog sport that tests tracking, obedience, and protection skills. Originally developed to evaluate German Shepherds for breeding suitability, it is now a competitive sport that showcases the highest levels of dog training and handler skill.

Is protection dog training safe for my family?

Yes — when done by a professional. A properly trained protection dog has an "on/off" switch. They are calm, social, and safe around family members and guests in normal situations, but respond decisively to genuine threats on command. Thomas trains every protection dog to be family-safe.

What breeds are best for protection training?

German Shepherds are the gold standard for personal protection work due to their intelligence, loyalty, and natural protective instincts. Belgian Malinois, Rottweilers, and Dobermans are also excellent candidates. Thomas evaluates each dog individually for suitability before beginning protection work.

German Shepherd Puppies

What should I look for in a German Shepherd puppy?

Look for a confident, curious temperament — not overly shy or aggressive. Health clearances for hips and elbows are essential. Champion bloodlines with proven working ability and stable temperament are the gold standard. Thomas breeds only from top-quality German lines with verified health testing.

How much does a German Shepherd puppy cost?

Quality German Shepherd puppies from champion bloodlines range from $1,500 to $3,500 or more depending on pedigree, health testing, and training potential. Call Thomas directly for current pricing and availability of upcoming litters.
